  21. This program is a fileserver for RISC OS machines. 
  22.  
  23. It is still in a very experimental state and there are numerous known
  24. deficiencies in the  client services it performs.  However it is still a
  25. very useful program. 
  26.  
  27. It is an 'Acorn' compatible server as far as is possible.  It mimics the
  28. Acorn style of space  accounting, group and user names. It is also
  29. password file syntax compatible with Acorn  servers.

  32. It is limited by the nature of the RISC OS Filing systems that it
  33. serves.  Most of these  will be instantiations  (Acorns word not mine)
  34. of Filecore and as such will have an upper limit of directory entries
  35. that is lower than a normal Fileserver.

  37. At its current level of development it should be regarded as a useful
  38. utility rather than a  replacement for an Acorn server.  
  39.

  41. There are currently known only to be four client requests not supported
  42. by the server.   They are *LOAD & *SAVE as command line operations, 
  43. the CatHeader and UID function  call.  The only machines likely
  44. to be affected by these three (I hope) are Atoms, Systems or ARC only 
  45. nets using the broadcast loader (of which there are currently non).

  49. Those of you who attended the Australian 1988 Econet conference may have
  50. seen my  Front end & Management system for Filestore.  Unfortunately for
  51. that system the recent  releases of Filestore code (1.39 at the time of
  52. writing)  are a down grade on the original Filestore code (1.23).  No
  53. work at all has been done on the Frontend since then.  This  server was
  54. an attempt to provide an upgrade path to the users of my Frontend. 
  55. Granted it  involved them throwing away their Filestores, no doubt some
  56. bits could be recycled for  useful purposes, like door stops perhaps.

  59. You will need to do a little work setting up the server before you can
  60. use it.  The servers  operational parameters are setup as system
  61. variables in the !Run file before the server  starts.  You should edit
  62. that file to suit your self.  Briefly the items that can be set are as 
  63. follows;

  66. Set Server$DevX:ClientAreaName  Adfs::4.$
  67. Set Server$DevX_PWF  Adfs::4.$.Passwords
  68.  
  69. This pair of lines can be repeated up to 10 times.  Starting with X=0 to
  70. X=9.  It defines  the locations of the areas you wish to server, and
  71. also the name that area will have when  viewed from the net.  You should
  72. substitute appropriate names in place of  ClienAreaName in the above
  73. example.

  75. You can see from this that you can serve any area of the RISC OS filing
  76. system world.   The second line above is where to find the Password file
  77. for the area.  It should be noted  that it is not necessary for the
  78. password file to reside in the shared area, and can thus be  hidden from
  79. the clients.

  81. The following line sets the maximum number of users that can log on to
  82. the server.

  86. It is also possible to get the server to write a trace file of all the
  87. requests made by the  clients.  The following line would set up a trace.

  108. It should be noted that the trace file gets VERY BIG very fast and should
  109. only be used in exceptional circumstances.  It may be helpful in reporting
  110. bugs.

  113. Introduced a command line option -NOICON.  This causes the server
  114. to run under the wimp but not to create a icon bar icon.  This helps to reduce
  115. desktop clutter!  It can still be killed via the task manager.

  126. It has been noticed that I don't support functions calls 32/33 (As of SFS 1.40.00)
  127. This will be done when I find out what they do!  
  128. I don't think that this version will support broadcast loading yet.  I am not sure 
  129. what server facilities are required by this.

  132. Now serves a made up SIN.  Which should suffice for broadcast loader support.
  133. Now has a 'xx user(s) logged on, are you sure you want to quit?' dialogue box.
